Sailability Group
We have an active Sailability group, which is set up as an independent charity.

The group has its own cruiser ‘Alicia’, as well as access to other Club boats.

The group organises cruises and other events in conjunction with Gravesend MVS.

Further Information
The Group was started 20 years ago with the object of improving access to sailing for disabled and less able people. With its centre at Gravesend Sailing Club, it includes both able bodied members who are committed to helping in any way they can (some of these hold RYA coaching qualifications) and some with various kinds of disability.

At present the group numbers about 50 members, of which at least twelve have some physical difficulty which interferes with their full enjoyment of sailing.

The Group is recognised by the RYA and is administered by a committee and trustees.

The group is a registered Charity, getting the Club awarded 'Foundation Level Status' by RYA Sailability, generating local interest and claiming various grants and donations from local businesses. In 2003 ago we purchased the Wayfarer ‘Freedom’ (now sold on) and other equipment and in 2015 the 33’ cruiser ‘Alicia’. Our main purpose, however, is to improve facilities at our host Club for less able people so that they too can enjoy sailing.

Several Open Days and other events have been organised by the Sailability group and supported by club members. Such events are included in the annual GSC sailing calendar.

The group provided funds to help the club purchase an accessible landing stage which includes wheel chair access and a hydraulic hoist for assisting disabled members into boats.

GSC and the Sailability Group.
Gravesend Sailing Club hosts most of the activities of the Group; most (but not all) members are also Club Members. We use GSC facilities, and therefore the non-club members who use them are limited by visitor rules - six occasions, after which they are expected to apply for Club membership.
